In a historic development, Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir has been promoted to the rank of Field Marshal, making him the first Pakistani general to receive the ceremonial five-star rank since General Ayub Khan in 1959. The federal cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, approved the promotion on Tuesday in recognition of Munir’s leadership during Pakistan’s recent military conflict with India, codenamed Marka-i-Haq and Operation Bunyanum Marsoos.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) lauded Munir’s “strategic brilliance and courageous leadership,” which it said led to a decisive victory and safeguarded national security during the country’s worst military confrontation with India in nearly three decades. General Asim Munir, commissioned through the Officers Training School Mangla, has previously served as the chief of Military Intelligence and the Inter-Services Intelligence. He assumed command of the army in November 2022, and his term was extended to five years through a parliamentary amendment in 2023.
Accepting the honour, COAS General Asim Munir said he was grateful to God for receiving the position, dedicating it to the “entire nation, the armed forces of Pakistan, especially the civil and military martyrs and veterans”.
“I am grateful to the president of Pakistan, the prime minister and the cabinet for their trust,” he said in a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), adding that the honour was the trust of the nation, for which “millions of Asims have sacrificed themselves”.
“This is not an individual honour but an honour for the armed forces of Pakistan and the entire nation,” he said.
What is a Field Marshal?
The rank of Field Marshal is the highest possible military designation, traditionally reserved for extraordinary wartime leadership and strategic achievement. Unlike the role of army chief, which comes with operational command and a fixed term of service, the field marshal rank is largely ceremonial and does not entail retirement or a regular command post.
Field marshals in Pakistan, following the British military tradition, are awarded the rank for exceptional national service during periods of war. The only other recipient of the title was General Mohammad Ayub Khan, who conferred the rank upon himself in 1959 during his tenure as president and military ruler.
According to security officials, General Asim Munir will retain his position as army chief alongside the ceremonial title.
The move comes days after Pakistan and India engaged in a tense four-day military exchange, which began with Indian air strikes on Azad Kashmir and Punjab on the night of May 6–7, followed by Pakistan downing 6 Indian jets and striking back. A ceasefire brokered by the United States was reached on May 10, though regional tensions remain high.
