When the Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed in Ahmedabad today, the whole world reacted as caring, empathetic human beings were expected to, regardless of national origin. It doesn't matter for us sitting across borders that we are in a war-like state.
Likewise, when a social media TikTokker is gunned down in one country, people with a heart react across borders.
Then one wonders, why has the world and responsible bodies failed to stop a live genocide and mass starvation in Gaza for nearly two years?
The progress of the human race can be attributable to the wheel, electrification, transportation across the seas, computer literacy, medical science advancement, space technology and now artificial intelligence, to name some key advancements.
The regression of the human race, on the contrary, can be enumerated as violent extermination of populations, suppression of freedom of expression, unabated arms proliferation, health inequity, economic disparities, gender-based violence, dysfunctional international order, political chaos—to name some abominations.
If we as a collective cohort of humanity cannot achieve peace and establish justice for each other, the United Nations has outlived its utility and needs to be immediately rethought
The interesting fact is that human beings who are fair, impartial, just and reflective individuals will all agree on a common moral code of ethics, whether they are at the receiving end or guilty of perpetrating harm.
Even those heavily biased or prejudiced based on religion, race, national or ethnic origin agree on the nature of excesses committed against their fellow concerns but paradoxically do not judge themselves by the same standards when their populations commit barbarism, terrorism or downright genocide.
I therefore challenge these individuals and populations to hold themselves to the same standards as they would for others.
This is what the United Nations and its Security Council was created for. If the majority can be vetoed by five member states against collective global standards of fair play and justice, this is not a viable body. After the recent Security Council meeting where 14 members were vetoed against by a gun-toting and sponsoring nation, the General Body will now attempt to exert moral superiority and a counter coup on a fair and just call for a permanent ceasefire to enable a bombed and starved population to recuperate—and more precisely, survive!
If we as a collective cohort of humanity cannot achieve peace and establish justice for each other, the United Nations has outlived its utility and needs to be immediately rethought, reformed, withdrawn from or better still disbanded in the case of a status quo!
