Olomopolo Media, in collaboration with Aga Khan Cultural Service – Pakistan (AKCS-P) and the Embassy of Portugal in Pakistan, organised a masterclass led by celebrated Portuguese guitarist and composer, Pedro Jóia. The event took place at the Olo Junction in Muslim Town this Sunday.
Pedro Jóia skillfully wove a seamless string of jazz melodies as he strummed his guitar for a captivated audience, periodically deconstructing his craft with fascinating insights. The dimly lit room resonated with ethereal musical notes and stories of travel, passion, and learning, evoking the ambience of blasé European towns.
Jóia offered insights into the genre of music he performs and the musical traditions that have shaped his work. Reflecting on his journey, he shared that he once traveled to Andalusia in southern Spain, the birthplace of Flamenco guitar—an experience that, in his words, changed his life. One day, upon hearing someone play classical jazz guitar, he felt an instant spark of passion and realised it was his true calling. Pedro Jóia then embarked on a four-year private apprenticeship with his mentor. While this training refined his guitar skills, it also taught him the nuances of stage performance, including techniques to overcome fear and connect with audiences. “Those years in Spain had a massive impact on me as a musician,” he emphasised.
Though Portugal may seem a relatively small country, its music is remarkably diverse, drawing inspiration from traditions both within Europe and beyond. Pedro hails from Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, which boasts a rich tradition of Fado music. He described Fado as deeply nostalgic. “Nearly 500 years ago, when the Portuguese set out on expeditions to explore new civilisations and ways of life, they naturally sought to blend with other cultures. Many traveled far from home and grew homesick, infusing their music with sadness, longing, and nostalgia.”

Pedro considers his music a fusion of classical jazz, flamenco, and Fado. He explained that while he takes immense pride in his Portuguese heritage, he also holds a deep admiration for neighboring Spain, reflecting his broader fascination with cultural exchange. His exploration of musical genres extends beyond Europe, however. Pedro spoke warmly of his love for Pakistani music, recalling how he was introduced to legendary Qawwals like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and the Sabri Brothers at the age of 15. “Music from South Asia touches my heart; it is indeed incredible,” he enthused before a delighted audience.
The session transformed into an immersive experience when Pedro Jóia invited attendees to join him on stage. One enthusiastic young guitarist accepted the offer, performing alongside the maestro with remarkable confidence. Adopting the tone of a patient teacher, Pedro stressed the importance of daily practice, comparing it to a half-hour walk that yields profound long-term benefits. “Music involves a great deal of structure and repetition; it is all about daily discipline,” he remarked.
Frederico Silva, Ambassador of Portugal to Pakistan, who attended as Chief Guest, concluded the session with some reflections. “We are delighted to collaborate with Aga Khan Cultural Service – Pakistan and Olomopolo Media. Over the years, I’ve learned that culture is one of the most powerful tools in my profession, as my role is not merely to connect nations but also people.”
