In an era where climate change poses an increasing threat, the protection and adaptation of old buildings in Pakistan is not merely about preserving the past; it is about leveraging traditional knowledge and practices to build a more sustainable future. By integrating the wisdom of old construction techniques with modern technology, Pakistan can tackle climate change while preserving its rich cultural heritage.

The concept of climate-resilient heritage preservation underscores the necessity of integrating climate adaptation and mitigation into heritage conservation practices. This principle gained significant attention at COP26 in Glasgow. During this conference, global leaders, policymakers, and activists highlighted the importance of preserving historical structures and traditional construction techniques as part of the broader strategy to combat climate change. COP26 recognised that these sites are not just remnants of the past, but vital resources for a sustainable future.

The preservation of these sites and the wisdom embodied in their construction can guide modern development, offering low-carbon, climate-resilient solutions aligned with the global goal of achieving net-zero emissions. This message is particularly relevant for Pakistan, as integrating traditional, sustainable building practices into new development must be a priority.

In Pakistan, the architectural heritage of regions like Gilgit-Baltistan, Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan offers valuable lessons in sustainability and climate resilience. These regions’ ancestors built homes and structures that were not only well-suited to their local environments but also inherently eco-friendly, using natural materials like wood, mud, stone, and lime. They understood the connection between their choices and the environment, which is why they considered the climate when constructing their houses.

Whether it was the wood and stone houses of Gilgit-Baltistan, the mud houses of Sindh and Balochistan, or the havelis of Punjab, these structures were inherently sustainable, offering natural insulation, ventilation, and resilience against harsh weather, and they provide a wealth of wisdom in addressing today’s climate crises.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, the traditional houses built by ancestors were constructed using local materials like stone, mud, and wood. These materials were chosen not only because they were readily available but also because they were well-suited to the region's harsh climate. The thick stone walls with a layer of mud provided insulation against cold, while wood beams offered flexibility and strength.

The structure was also climate-responsive, with features like high ceilings and strategically placed windows that facilitate natural ventilation and lighting. Structures like Altit Fort, Baltit Fort, and Shigar Fort are living examples of this architectural wisdom. These buildings have stood the test of time, surviving centuries of harsh weather conditions without the need for modern heating and cooling systems.

Similarly, in Sindh, the ancient city of Mohenjo-Daro and the traditional mud houses in rural areas were constructed with thick walls that provide natural insulation against extreme heat, reducing the need for artificial cooling systems. In Punjab, the Shahi forts, havelis, and traditional townhouses featured high ceilings, large courtyards, and jharokhas (overhanging enclosed balconies), which not only added to their aesthetic appeal but also helped to maintain a comfortable indoor climate.

In Balochistan, traditional katcha houses were built using mud and locally sourced materials. These homes were designed to withstand the region’s extreme weather conditions, providing warmth in winter and coolness in summer. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) offers a similar infrastructure, where traditional houses in mountain regions were constructed with local wood and stone, blending seamlessly with the natural landscape while offering protection from harsh weather.

Despite the wisdom of our ancestors, modern construction practices in Pakistan have increasingly moved away from these sustainable techniques. The widespread use of reinforced concrete and other industrial materials has led to the construction of buildings that are not only energy-intensive but also ill-suited to the local climate.

These modern buildings often require constant heating in winter and cooling in summer, leading to increased energy consumption and higher carbon emissions. The techniques that our ancestors perfected to live in harmony with the environment have been largely abandoned in favour of short-term economic gain and convenience.

This shift has not only increased our environmental footprint but also left us more vulnerable to the effects of climate change. As temperatures rise and weather patterns become more unpredictable, the shortcomings of modern construction are increasingly apparent.

In light of these challenges, the contrast between traditional and modern construction practices becomes more significant. The shortcomings of contemporary construction methods underscore the need to revisit and revive the sustainable practices of our past. If our ancestors could build with climate and future generations in mind, then we, too, have a responsibility to do the same. By integrating traditional construction techniques with modern innovations, we can create buildings that are not only functional and aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally responsible.

In regions like Gilgit-Baltistan, there is already a movement towards reviving these traditional techniques. Locals are using stone, mud, and wood to create structures that blend with the natural environment, promoting eco-tourism and preserving cultural heritage.

The Gilgit-Baltistan government is exploring ways to integrate traditional construction designs with modern needs. In collaboration with organisations like the Aga Khan Rural Support Program (AKRSP), the GB government has undertaken several heritage conservation projects. Restoration of iconic sites such as Shigar Fort, Khaplu Fort, Altit Fort, and Baltit Fort serves as a model of how traditional construction methods can be revived and adapted for modern use.

Therefore, modern construction in Pakistan can learn a lot from traditional techniques. The government should provide incentives for the preservation of old buildings and the adaptation of traditional construction techniques in new development. Additionally, collaboration between architects, historians, conservationists, and environmental scientists is essential to developing innovative solutions that integrate traditional and modern practices. In this way, old buildings do not just serve as historical landmarks; they become active participants in the global effort to combat climate change.
