The Leicesters march to Razmak during the Waziristan Campaign that began in 1936, in response to unrest that followed the rise of the political and religious figure Faqir of Ipi.
The first expedition of the Razmak Column had been sent to establish the government's writ and resolve but only ended up causing embarrassment to the government. A second assault in 1937 also suffered heavy losses because of the tribesmen's guerrilla tactics, but the British were able to quieten down the insurrection, and the area remained largely peaceful until the end of their rule in 1947.
