Amidst the heart-breaking tragedy of the recent India-Pakistan war, a massive proportion of misinformation continued to plague mainstream and social media, reminding us of the fact that the disinformation campaign is an inevitable part and parcel of the theatre of war. Its lethal impact on the conflict disclosed its capability to influence public opinion. Considerable amounts of evidence from the war have highlighted various forms of fake propaganda, which kept the general public deprived of reliable information. A noticeable number of pro-Indian versus pro-Pakistani posts were prevalent all across social media. Meanwhile, local content creators on both sides also documented their respective experiences coupled with conspiracy theories, leading to distortion of information and even dehumanization of adversaries.
A clear rise in division, polarisation and hateful narrative became visibly apparent which, if left unleashed, could become a driver of further conflict
Although unverifiable claims of military success have been promoted from both sides, a significant surge in deepfake videos and misinformation propaganda from the Indian side hit its peak. In the absence of any particular comprehensive regulation, the misuse of various sophisticated AI tools, responsible for creating doctored videos, caused significant harm by escalating tensions, apart from distorting people's understanding of reality. India has recently been struggling with the proliferation of deepfake online videos and also identifies as the sixth most susceptible country to this alarming threat. As per the WEF 2024 Global Risk Report, "India was ranked highest for the risk of misinformation and disinformation." The tremendous amount of deepfake videos posted online from the Indian side not only exacerbated tensions but also opened floodgates of hate speech. Although a ceasefire came into practice after a few bloody skirmishes between the two states, yet a "no truce" situation continued in the disinformation sector.
Platform X, like other social media accounts, was also flooded with irresponsible claims. Fake videos claiming Indian soldiers abandoning their posts and an Indian female pilot being captured by the Pakistani side were some of the false propaganda prevalent all across social media sites. The DG ISPR responded to the false claim of an Indian pilot being captured by clearly stating that, "We don't have any pilot in our custody. This is all social media chatter."
Where on one hand, Pakistan's information warfare strategy helped it to take advantage over its adversary, alternatively the Indian media completely focused on spreading misinformation. Information warfare strategy has the potential to play a major role in exerting control during wartime, as rightly endorsed by General Ronald R Fogleman: "Dominating the information spectrum is as critical to the conflict now as occupying the land or controlling the air has been in the past." Pakistan's Air Marshal Aurangzeb Ahmed gave a comprehensive briefing to the international media highlighting Pakistan's ability as a cohesive fighting force. Meanwhile, there was a complete absence of a similar press briefing from the Indian Air Chief, which eventually allowed the Pakistani narrative to successfully thrive, resulting in a swift victory within the information sphere. As per The Indian Express, "While there was no official statement on the meeting, Air Chief Marshal Singh and the Prime Minister were said to have discussed the security scenario and the options on the table."
Whilst the information space was riddled with distorted facts further fueling polarization, an Indian news channel by the name of Aaj Tak issued an apology over fake India-Pakistan war news. This correction by the channel is a brave initiative and should be followed by others as it would prevent a further decline in public trust in traditional journalism. During the recent Indo-Pak war, a clear rise in division, polarization, and hateful narrative became visibly apparent which, if left unleashed, could become a driver of further conflict alongside jeopardizing opportunities for lasting peace and stability.
A clear policy focused on curbing fake narratives not only allows stakeholders to promote the necessary engagement for conflict resolution but is also imperative for creating a fair and unbiased perspective.
