Pakistan And India Elected To UN Human Rights Council As General Assembly Confirms 14 New Members

Pakistan and India have been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) for the 2026–2028 term, following a secret ballot at the UN General Assembly in New York. Pakistan secured 178 votes, while India received 177, placing both South Asian countries on the 47-member body from the Asia-Pacific group.

All regional slates were uncontested this year, with seats distributed according to the UN’s geographic allocation system.

Pakistan’s Sixth Term on HRC

According to a statement issued by Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this marks the country’s sixth election to the Council since its creation in 2006. The Foreign Office said the result reflects broad support for Pakistan’s engagement on human rights at the UN and its role in the international human rights system.

The statement said Pakistan intends to work with member states and civil society on civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, as well as the right to development. It added that Pakistan will continue to participate in discussions on situations of human rights concern globally, including those relating to Kashmir and Palestine.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, described the election as “a great honour,” noting the high vote count. He said Pakistan would approach its term with “renewed resolve” and thanked countries that supported its candidacy.

India, Iraq and Viet Nam were also elected from the Asia-Pacific group. Viet Nam received 180 votes, Pakistan 178, India 177 and Iraq 175.
