Jirga Orders Killing: 19-Year-Old Khalida Shot Dead In Khairpur Village

A teenage girl was killed in an honor killing in Burdo Chandio village, within the limits of Tando Masti Police Station, district Khairpur, late Tuesday night. The 19-year-old, Khalida, had entered into a free-will marriage with a man reportedly belonging to Karachi. After around a week of marriage, the husband reportedly abandoned her, following mounting pressure from his parents.

After being abandoned by her husband, when she returned to her native village, the local villagers, headed by a chieftain, convened a Jirga and unanimously decided to end Khalida's life, as she had tarnished the honor of the tribe. Soon after the verdict of the Jirga, a man gunned down Khalida in the presence of over 50 villagers, who witnessed the gruesome offense take place with their own eyes.

Soon after the incident, police arrested three key accused involved in the horrific episode. SSP Khairpur, Amir Saud Magsi, said that the footage of the incident had gone viral on social media, causing unrest across the province. He further said that all those involved in convening the Jirga would be brought to book.
