The Nuclear Renaissance refers to a period of renewed interest in nuclear energy and its sister technologies, which started with President Dwight D. Eisenhower's plan, "Atoms for Peace", aiming to boost understanding of nuclear technology for peaceful uses and military purposes, which latterly became the bedrock of rapid global nuclearisation.
Aftermath of the Cuban Missile Crisis, major powers sought to pull the world back from the nuclear brink through landmark agreements such as the 1963 Limited Test Ban Treaty, the SALT and ABM treaties of the 1970s, and the 1987 INF Treaty. President Reagan’s Zero Option proposal further reshaped global thinking by reducing the threat of nuclear fallout and reinforcing confidence in civilian nuclear use. With the Cold War’s end, arms-reduction efforts expanded, and growing security concerns prompted several states to reassess nuclear risks and close reactors, known as the second nuclear age.
The commercial nuclear renaissance resurfaced during the William George Bush administration, which sought to revitalise global atomic energy by forging the “Atoms for Peace and Prosperity” partnership with Russia and the United Kingdom. His approach aims to speed up licensing for new reactors, including partnerships like Australia’s, to close the reactor gap, reduce dependence on foreign technology, and position U.S. designs for global dominance. The administration has launched a nuclear-focused Operation Warp Speed, signing contracts with private companies from South Korea, France, Canada, and Germany to ensure a resilient supply chain.
It also sought to reform the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to rebuild public trust, support nuclear reactors for AI centres, construct ten new commercial reactors by 2030, restore Three Mile Island, accelerate advanced-reactor research through three pilot projects, and develop an interagency command system to shorten construction times. The plan includes developing AI-energy reactors quickly, modernising nuclear fuel systems, expanding high-level fuel recycling, and launching a national talent initiative to grow the workforce and boost domestic HALEU production. It aims to outpace Chinese and other global nuclear firms in nuclear power generation.
Additionally, Trump’s call to resume nuclear testing due to clandestine tests by China and Russia signals a “new era” of atomic politics with a higher proliferation cascade. This new era of nuclear politics triggers causes of nuclear weapons build-up and tests for indigenous nuclear deterrence, rather than relying solely on extended deterrence. Japan and South Korea have signalled a revision of their nuclear postures, which poses existential risks to the NNPR, especially the CTBTO norms.

Together, they threaten to erode NNPR norms, trigger proliferation cascades, lower thresholds for nuclear use, embed destabilising technologies in nuclear forces, normalise nuclear posturing, and increase the risk of accidents or inadvertent escalation, pushing the world toward a more volatile and permissive nuclear era.
