World War over Cows
According to Daily Jang (09 Sep, 2016), a religious group in India claimed that the Third World War will begin over the dispute around cow slaughter. The report stated that a swami in the employ of the Madhya Pradesh government offered this prediction at an event organized by a local committee of his religious group. He went on to remind his audience that the 1857 Indian mutiny also began over the issue of the cow.
School for ghosts
According to Daily Jang (12 Aug, 2016), in the Sunder area on the outskirts of Lahore, a government primary school for girls, established with an expenditure of several crore rupees, remains un-used since the early 2000s. The school, with its furniture and fittings rotting away and its yard in complete disrepair, presents the image of a haunted house (bhoot bangla).
Lightweight?
Aitzaz Ahsan, according to Daily Jang (15 Aug, 2016), PPP leader Aitzaz Ahsan said that Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar is ‘lighter than a gas-filled balloon’. Aitzaz went on to criticise the PML-N government for what he described as its failure to implement the National Action Plan.
Flowers for the Chief justice - across the border!
Daily Jang reported (16 Aug, 2016) that the Lahore Bar Association have stated that they want to send flowers to the Chief Justice of India for his remarks which contradicted the views of Prime Minister Modi. The Lahore Bar believes that the Chief Justice’s criticism of Mr. Modi means that he accepts Pakistan’s perspective - that the Indian Prime Minister should refrain from meddling in Pakistani affairs.
“I’m taking my husband with me!”
Daily Jang reported (18 Aug, 2016) that an additional sessions court in Lahore was able to ensure the recovery of a man from custody of his brother, on the complaint of his wife. The court ensured that the man was handed over to his wife and she left with him.
Messing with the wrong officer
Daily Jang (19 Aug, 2016) reported that two milk-sellers found themselves in hot water after confronting the Director of the Punjab Food Authority, Ayesha Mumtaz, when she stopped them for inspection of the milk they were carrying, which was found to be unhygienic. The two milk-sellers misbehaved with Ayesha Mumtaz, upon which local police promptly arrested them.
Still waiting
Daily Jang (20 Aug, 2016) reported that a man accused of theft in Lahore has been behind bars for 16 years now (since 2001) but his case has not proceeded any further. Police have even lost the FIR recorded against him.
Half an hour to make it up to the missus
Daily Express (16 Aug, 2016) reported that a husband and wife who were known for fighting over small matters took their disputes to the Lahore High Court. The wife arrived with a litany of accusations (shikayat ke anbaar lagaa diay) against her husband. The Court gave the husband half an hour to make it up to his wife. He then apologised to her for his shortcomings in the courtroom, and the family, with their children, left the court together.
‘Chaar botal vodka’
Daily Express (17 Aug, 2016) reported that two patrolling operatives of the Ring Road police, Lahore, have been recommended for certificates of merit. Their achievement is that they seized four bottles of liquor/alcoholic drinks from a suspicious-looking car in the early hours of the morning.
Fall 2016 ‘Collection’
Police in Burewala apprehended two women who apparently stole 45 suits from a shop selling clothes – all in one heist. According to the Daily Express (20 Aug, 2016), the shop owner reported them to the police. During investigation, 10 suits were recovered from them immediately. Local authorities are pursuing the case of theft now.
