Can Islam And Liberalism Coexist?

Can Islam and liberalism coexist? What should be the role of the state in a Muslim society? And should every religiously condemned act automatically become a crime? In this conversation, we explore the relationship between Islam, liberty, religious freedom and state power. The discussion examines contentious questions surrounding apostasy, blasphemy, freedom of conscience, Islamic jurisprudence and the interpretation of religious texts. The conversation also looks at the distinction between sin and crime, arguing that something considered religiously sinful does not necessarily have to be criminalised by the state. Examples from Turkey, Iran, Indonesia, Pakistan and other Muslim-majority societies are discussed in exploring whether religious commitment is better sustained through persuasion and example rather than coercion.
