19 brands of bottled water unsafe
According to Jang (July 17, 2014), 19 brands of bottled water in Pakistan were found to be unsafe for consumption in a research. The samples contained material that could cause cancer and heart and kidney diseases.
Malik family becomes Arain for wedding
Reported in Express (July 18, 2014), a Malik family lied about their caste to an Arain family and married their son to the Arain family’s daughter. When the Arains found out, they filed a report with the police to stop their daughter from living with her husband. A Lahore High Court let her go with her husband and told the police not to harass the couple.
Mother-in-law attacks love-marriage groom in court
Reported in Dunya (July 19, 2014), when a High Court judge allowed a girl to go with the man she had married without her parents’ consent, the girl’s mother and her accomplices showered slaps on the man (thaprron ki barish), and the courtyard became a battleground (maidan-e-jang ban gya).
PML-N lawmaker raids police station to free aides
Express reports (July 20, 2014) that an MPA from the PML-N attacked a police station in Kharriyanwala, broke down the doors and windows, and beat up policemen to free his men who they had arrested. He said they had raided the men’s compound and held them without warrant.
Tardy National Assembly officials fear biometric system
According to Nawa-e-Waqt (July 21, 2014), officials of the National Assembly who are in the habit of arriving late for work are wary of a new biometric system installed on the premises. They will have to sign in and out using their thumbprints, and if they are late, they may be fined.
Women shopping for Eid attacked with acid
Reported in Jang (July 22, 2014), four men riding motorbikes threw acid on four women for buying bangles for Eid at a shop in Saryab area of Balochistan. They used syringes to spray acid on the women.
High Court guards have no fans
According to Express (July 23, 2014), the security guards at the Church Gate of Lahore High Court have been performing their duties without a fan for the last 15 days. The fan broke down and has not been repaired despite several applications.
Criminal uses extortion money to order shoes
Reported in Dunya (July 24, 2014), a trader from Ichhra was threatened with a bomb attack on his home and a gun attack that injured him, by extortionist who used to call him first from Miranshah and lately from Afghanistan. When he agreed to pay them money, they gave him the account number of the owner of a shoe factory. Upon being arrested, the factory owner said the man from Miranshah ordered shoes from his factory and had told him the payment would be deposited in his account.
Constables locked up for flying kites
Reported in Jang (July 25, 2014) two police constables were arrested after a public complaint that they used to fly kites. A case has been registered and the cops have been put in the lock-up.
Free flow of traffic
Reported in Nawa-e-Waqt (July 26, 2014), a senior traffic police official in Lahore said traffic wardens would not fine people violating traffic rules between July 26 and Eid. This would ensure a smooth flow of traffic and help facilitate the public.
Women activists send bangles to politicians
Reported in Nawa-e-Waqt (July 27, 2014), women activists from Multan’s Civil Society Network sent bangles to key parliamentarians from the south Punjab region to shame them for not solving the region’s problems. They said they did not want public transport projects, they wanted their own province.
PTI lawmaker attacks railway crossing gatekeeper
Dunya reports (July 28, 2014) that an MPA from the PTI and his gunmen beat up a railway gatekeeper in Bhakkar because he refused to open a closed railway crossing for him.
