Horde of restaurant raiders
It was reported by Daily Jang (Aug 02, 2016) that a British-born Pakistani woman complained to Gulberg (Lahore) police that her restaurant was smashed up by a man, his mother and ‘forty to fifty’ (chaalees pachaas) accomplices. The crowd of looters took away large sums of money and smashed the costly interior of the restaurant.
Dangerous donkey
A man took his neighbour before the Law for the misdeeds of the latter’s donkey. Daily Jang reported (Aug 04, 2016) that the donkey, resident of Raiwind, Lahore, bit and killed the complainant’s rare and costly chicken. The man values his chicken at Rs. 14,000. Police have arrested the owner of the donkey.
Sahiwal’s finest?
Daily Express (Aug 02, 2016) reported that residents of Sahiwal apprehended two police constables, who were robbing a man of his motorcycle and cash. Residents beat them (chitrawl) and handed them over to the police station. After registration of a case against the two bandit cops, locals held a protest condemning their protectors turning into robbers.
Innocent malangg
A malangg picked up a discarded old quilt from a trash container, and passersby called in the police, stating that he was dumping a dead body. Daily Nawa-e-Waqt reports (Aug 05, 2016) that police rushed to the scene (police ki dorrein) and searched the quilt in question, only to find that it was a false alarm and the malangg had done nothing wrong.
‘America made us put ‘jihad’ in textbooks’
Daily Nawa-e-Waqt reported (Aug 06, 2016) Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani as saying that ‘jihadi’ material was put into Pakistani textbooks because the United States wanted it. The Chairman of the Islamic Ideology Council went on to state that the United States wanted people for hire (karaye ke loog) against Russia. He added that trade and hard work are also considered jihad.
Ten-rupee meals for detectives
Staff at the Investigation Police Headquarters at Qilla Gujjar Singh, Lahore, will now be able to have meals for just Rs. 10 at a low-cost canteen. Daily Nawa-e-Waqt (Aug 06, 2016) reports that this was made possible by the efforts of a local NGO.
Dharnas ‘worse than 1971’
Daily Jang (Aug 05, 2016) reported Chief Minister of Punjab Shahbaz Sharif as saying that people who jeopardise development projects through protests and sit-ins (dharnay) are committing a worse crime than those responsible for the tragedy of 1971.
Consequences of crashing a party
Daily Express (Aug 07, 2016) reported that a police team tasked with halting a dance party were attacked and chased by 29 people. Matters descended into chaos when the police team attempted to close down the sound system and halt the dance of khwajah serah performers - which greatly infuriated the people attending.
“Become Muhammad bin Qasim!”
Daily Express (Aug 05, 2016), quoted the leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, Mr. Siraj-ul-Haq, as saying that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should play the role of Muhammad bin Qasim, rather than being friendly to India. He said this while addressing a Kashmir solidarity march by the women of Jamat-e-Islami in Karachi.
Double or nothing
It was reported by Daily Dunya (Aug 04, 2016) that a gang of fraudsters in Kasur deprived a resident of the sum of Rs. 400,000. He was walking home after having withdrawn the money from a bank. The con-men got him to take a car-ride with them, and in the course of this journey, convinced him that if he gave them all his money, they would double the amount and return it to him. Local police are investigating.
