Parents want son released from sit-in
According to Jang (September 17, 2014), a couple from Malikwal says their 22-year-old son, an alumnus of Tahirul Qadri’s Minhajul Quran Institute, was taken to Lahore and then forced to go to Islamabad for the anti-government sit-in. He says he is not being allowed to come back. The couple asked the interior minister and Islamabad police chief to get their son released.
Pakistanis prefer corrupt neighbors over drunk neighbors
Reported in Nai Baat (September 17, 2014), a survey reveals that Pakistanis would like having a neighbor who takes bribes more than a neighbor who drinks. Sixty-four percent Pakistanis would not have a problem having a neighbor who became rich by taking bribes, but only sixty-one percent would want a neighbor who drinks.
Saint slaughters disciple in failed miracle
Reported in Express (September 18, 2014) a man claiming sainthood in a village near Lahore slaughtered his disciple as villagers looked on from their rooftops and walls. The man said he could bring the dead back to life.
Imran’s tigers begin to fight each other
Nawa-e-Waqt reports (September 18, 2014) ‘tigers’ at Imran Khan’s sit-in in Islamabad began to fight each other. One of them ended up with a broken head. Imran Khan tried to calm them down from the top of his container but they did not listen.
Doctors go on strike after traffic warden beats up colleague
Reported in Dunya (September 19, 2014) a traffic warden allegedly beat up a doctor right outside Lahore General Hospital, where he works. When the other doctors found out, they went on a strike. A large number of doctors arrived at the site and filed a complaint with the police.
PTI leaders disobey disobedience orders
Jahangir Tarin and Shah Mahmood Qureshi have defied their captain’s instructions and paid their electricity bills, reports Jang (September 19, 2014). The Multan Electric Supply Company told the Water and Power Ministry in a report that the two leaders and their close relatives have paid all the bills due for August.
Woman with fake degree worked 13 years for government
Reported in Nai Baat (September 20, 2014), the anti-corruption directorate is looking for a woman who served in the Social Welfare Department for 13 years on a fake university degree.
‘Do you want to lick these tents?’
Quoted in Dunya (September 21, 2014), upon being told by a district official in Hafizabad that 2,000 tents had not been distributed to flood victims yet, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif asked him if he wanted to lick them (kya yeh khaimay aap nay chatnay hain?).
‘Go Nawaz Go was a slip of tongue’
Quoted in Express (September 21, 2014) Pir Sabir Shah, the PML-N president in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa who had shouted ‘Go Nawaz Go’ during a speech at a public meeting, says it was a slip of tongue. I wanted to say Jeo Nawaz Jeo and Go Imran Go, but my tongue slipped and I said Go Nawaz Go.
Actresses fight over dance number during live show
Reported in Dunya (September 22, 2014) there was a spat between actresses Khushbu and Mahnoor (shadeed talkh-kalami) during a live show at Shalimar Theater in Lahore. They both wanted to dance on the same song. The audience began to hoot. Eventually, Khushbu left the play and went home.
The Baba Jee mystery
Jang reports (September 22, 2014) that when Imran Khan arrived on stage to address his Karachi rally, Javed Miandad reminded him he should recite three times the holy verses prescribed by the Baba Jee. It is not clear who the Baba Jee is, what verses he had prescribed, and for what purpose.
Transgenders challenge PTI to dance competition
Reported in Nawa-e-Waqt (September 22, 2014), a transgender association named Social Justice Party has challenged Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf to a dance competition. They say they will dance them out of the red zone (thumkay maar maar kay red zone say nikal dain gay). If dancing can bring a revolution, nobody can dance better than us. We are free of family relations and have no children. Those who oppose hereditary politics should join our party.
