Indian man shouts pro-Pakistan slogans
According to Jang (May 15, 2015) during a flags lowering event at the India-Pakistan border in Ganda Singh near Lahore, a man from the Indian side began shouting slogans in favor of Pakistan. Indian security officials were concerned (tashweesh ki leher dorr gayee) and took him away (utha kar lay gaye).
PTI tigers beat up reporters twice in a day
Express says (May 16, 2015) PTI ‘tigers’ beat up a group of reporters covering Imran Khan’s public meeting in Multan after a quarrel (talkh kalami), throwing chairs at them. The media boycotted the event, but came back when the party leaders apologized. In the evening, the reporters were beaten up yet again.
PEMRA bans ‘honorable titles’ for terrorists
Reported in Dunya (May 17, 2015) Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority has told television news channels not to use honorable titles (ba izzat alqaab) with the names of terrorists. They must not use such titles as Molvi, Qari, Mufti or Hafiz with the names of terrorists, neither should they be called Doctor or Engineer.
Passers-by rob house on fire
Jang reports (May 18, 2015) during a fire at a house in Lahore that killed six children, people entered the house pretending to help, but broke into locked rooms to steal gold jewelry. Some even took away the earrings from the girls’ dead bodies.
Too short for an identity card
According to Nawa-e-Waqt (May 19, 2015) a 19-year-old man in Muzaffargarh has been denied an identity card by NADRA because he is only 32 inches tall. They refuse to accept his birth certificate and a certificate from a board of doctors, and instead ask for a CT Scan and a test of hormones. His family says they cannot afford the tests.
Gender and identity
According to Dunya (May 20, 2015) a 23-year-old man from Narang Mandi whose identity card says he is a woman has not been able to get the error fixed despite a struggle of three years (teen saal say zaleel-o-khwar). He says the boys college declined to admit him and sent him to a girls college, and he had to vote at women’s polling station in the 2013 elections. He says cruelty by NADRA and humiliation by the public has made him a mental patient.
Protocol paradox
Reported in Express (May 21, 2015) when police stopped traffic in Lahore for the Zimbabwean cricket team’s safe movement, the Punjab chief secretary also got stuck in the jam for more than 20 minutes. His operator kept calling the police to reopen traffic to get him out, but they declined (chitta jawab).
Youth sweethearts marry in old age
A 70-year-old man in Nankana Sahib got married to his youth sweetheart who is now 60, Nawa-e-Waqt reports (May 22, 2015). The man’s wife has died. He has two sons and a daughter, who are all married. The woman was divorced and does not have any children.
Goods disappear from 22 NATO containers
Jang reports (May 23, 2015) twenty-two containers that carried NATO goods from Torkham to Karachi were found empty when they arrived. According to FBR, the stolen goods included electricity generators and related equipment that were to be sent to Dubai. An FIR has been registered.
Good Samaritan gets a thrashing
Reported in Dunya (May 24, 215) three goons (aubash) were teasing girls in the Kahna area of Lahore. When a gentleman identified as Ilyas stopped them, they beat him up (dhulai kar dee). When the people of the neighborhood arrived, they ran away (faraar).
Actress’ gunmen injure bus driver
According to Nawa-e-Waqt (May 25, 2015) famous actress Honey Shahzadi’s gunmen shot and injured a bus driver in Faisalabad. The fight began after a quarrel in which they said he was blocking their way.
Double Shah strikes again
Express reports (May 26, 2015) famous con artist known as Double Shah, who had recently completed a seven-year jail term for fraud, robbed dozens of people yet again. He took millions of rupees promising to double them and disappeared (ghayab ho gya). He is not at home and his cellphone has been switched off. People have complained to the police and NAB.
