Over the past year, Pakistan has witnessed an unprecedented push towards AI and digital skills. The government's AI Seekho 2026 initiative, launched with Google's support, aims to train 100,000 developers in artificial intelligence.LinkedIn is filled with posts celebrating new AI certificates and prompt engineering badges. This democratisation of learning is welcome. Yet after spending the past few years teaching AI to students, professionals, executives and government institutions, I have noticed a worrying pattern. Too many young Pakistanis ask, "Which certification should I do next?" and too few ask, "What can I build with the skills I already have?"
This distinction matters because certificates and products signal different things. A certificate shows that someone invested time in learning a subject, but it says little about whether that person can identify a real problem, design a solution, work through uncertainty and improve it through feedback. Throughout my workshops, I have met talented students with impressive collections of certificates who struggle when asked to build even a simple solution for a genuine business challenge. Learning has become something we collect rather than something we apply.
That is not to suggest certificates have become irrelevant. They remain valuable for building foundations, demonstrating commitment and helping candidates clear initial hiring screens. However, their signalling power is weakening because knowledge itself is no longer scarce. A few years ago, learning AI required expensive courses or specialised university programmes. Today, anyone with an internet connection can access world-class tutorials, documentation and AI-powered learning assistants. As knowledge becomes abundant, execution becomes the differentiator. Employers are increasingly asking not what candidates have studied but what they have built.
Generative AI has accelerated this shift by dramatically lowering the barriers to building. Tasks that once required teams of developers can now be prototyped by individuals using AI-assisted coding tools and no-code platforms. When everyone has access to the same tools, competitive advantage comes from solving meaningful problems rather than simply mastering another platform.
The hiring market is already reflecting this reality. Recruiters, startup founders and incubators increasingly place greater emphasis on GitHub portfolios, hackathon projects and working prototypes than on another online credential. A functioning product demonstrates initiative, resilience, problem-solving and the ability to execute under uncertainty. Those qualities are difficult to measure through quizzes but become immediately visible when someone has built something people can actually use.
For Pakistani youth, this shift presents an opportunity rather than a challenge. Pakistan continues to face pressing problems across agriculture, healthcare, education, logistics, energy and public services. Farmers struggle to access timely information, small businesses still rely on manual processes and many public services remain fragmented and inefficient. These are not merely governance challenges; they are opportunities for young innovators to build products that create real value. Rather than trying to replicate Silicon Valley, Pakistan's greatest advantage may lie in solving problems that exist in its own communities.
The most important question a young Pakistani should ask after completing an AI course is not, "Which certification comes next?" but, "What problem can I solve now?"
We are already seeing encouraging examples. In 2025, 17-year-old Pakistani student Mahroosh Umer led a team that won the global AI4Good incubator with AgriGuard.AI, a platform providing climate-smart recommendations to smallholder farmers using satellite and soil data. The recognition came not because of the team's certifications but because they built a practical solution for a real problem. Similarly, PatientFirst.AI transformed the founders' experience with misplaced medical records into an award-winning healthcare platform. These ventures demonstrate that meaningful innovation begins with identifying problems worth solving, not with accumulating credentials.
We need to rethink how we define success in Pakistan's AI ecosystem. Instead of celebrating the number of certificates issued, we should celebrate the number of useful products launched. Universities should showcase startups emerging from final-year projects, boot camps should reward deployed solutions, and public AI initiatives should value prototypes alongside training numbers. Learning remains essential, but its purpose should always be to enable creation rather than accumulation.
Pakistan does not lack ambition, intelligence or access to learning. It has one of the world's youngest populations and unprecedented access to AI tools that make innovation more achievable than ever before. What we risk lacking is a culture that values building as much as studying. Every certificate should be viewed as the beginning of a journey, not its conclusion.
The next generation of Pakistani success stories will not be remembered for the number of certificates displayed on LinkedIn profiles. They will be remembered for the products that improve farms, classrooms, hospitals, businesses and public institutions. In an era where AI has made knowledge widely accessible, the people who stand out will not be those who learned the most. They will be those who built something that mattered.
