A cigar in Chitral (circa 2004)
In this photograph, Hollywood actor Robert Robert De Niro is pictured wearing a Chitrali hat as he smokes a cigar with a friend in Chitral. Di Niro visited Pakistan in 2004 when the Taliban insurgency was making gains in the country’s northern areas.

Not much is known of Di Niro’s visit to Pakistan but it is known that he stayed at Chitral’s best-known hotel Hindukush Heights, which sits on a hill and has beautiful views of the landscape for the visitor.

Owned by the Prince of Chitral himself, the rooms are decorated with hand-woven rugs, and open up to a balcony that overlooks the town with Terich Mir, the highest peak of the Hindu Kush, forming the background.

In a testimonial he wrote in the hotel’s visitor book, Di Niro described his stay there as “terrific.”

Many renowned celebrities have visited Chitral and stayed at the same hotel. When he visited, Luce Churchill wrote in the visitors’ book:”...so glad that the Churchills and ul-Mulks are no longer at war.”
