A key meeting of the Anti-Rape Special Committee was held on Friday at the Ministry of Law and Justice to deliberate on proposed amendments aimed at improving the implementation of Pakistan’s Sex Offenders Register (SOR).
Chaired by Senator Ayesha Raza Farooq, the meeting was attended by members of the Special Committee.
The Committee unanimously agreed to enhance the role of the police in implementing the SOR and expanding the legal framework for better management and monitoring of sex offenders. This expansion will involve utilising the capabilities of various agencies, conducting thorough risk assessments, and aligning with international best practices. The goal is to establish a more effective system for tracking, managing, and reducing risks posed by convicted sex offenders.
During discussions, members emphasised the need for collaboration among multiple stakeholders, including law enforcement and prosecution agencies, as well as prison and immigration authorities. These entities will work together to develop a comprehensive framework aimed at strengthening oversight and rehabilitation efforts, ensuring public safety, and minimising repeat offenses.
The proposed amendments and recommendations will be forwarded to the Ministry of Law and Justice, reinforcing the government's commitment to protecting vulnerable populations and upholding justice. The Committee remains dedicated to fostering a safer and more just society by ensuring proper monitoring and rehabilitation of convicted sex offenders in accordance with international best practices.
