The president, whose tenure ends on September 9, was born in Agra, north India. His family migrated to Pakistan in 1947 and settled in Karachi. Hussain was homeschooled before he joined Karachi University. Speaking at a parent’s day function at Cadet College Hassanabdal in 2016, the president mentioned how he had missed out on the joys of school and urged students to make the best use of their education for their families and the country.
Hussain studied commerce at Karachi University and graduated in 1963. He then joined the prestigious Institute of Business Administration and gained a master’s degree in 1965. Later, he ran his family’s textile business in Sindh, and was elected president of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1999.
Hussain began to take interest in politics in 1968 when he joined the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) led by Nurul Amin. Initially an activist with a missionary and reformative zeal in 1968, Hussain became the joint secretary of the Pakistan Muslim League’s Karachi chapter.
In June 1999, he became the governor of Sindh, but his term was cut short on 12 October, 1999. He was also a political prisoner during Pervez Musharraf’s regime.
The president has maintained a low profile throughout his term. This is in stark contrast to his predecessor, Asif Ali Zardari, who was constantly in the eye of the storm during his term.
