Border smuggling remains a persistent challenge between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Pakistani authorities have recently uncovered that organised groups of smugglers were exploiting Afghan children to carry foreign and local goods across the border between the two countries. About 50 children, including 17 girls were used for by smugglers, and most of these children were under the age of 10 as per authorities. Following the intervention of a tribal jirga, government sent back the Afghan children back through Torkham border on "humanitarian" grounds.
