Lawmaker Calls For Action To Curb Incidents Of Torture On Domestic Workers

Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Mehnaz Akber Aziz has strongly condemned the incident of brutal torture on an underage domestic worker, named Rizwana, by the wife of a civil judge.


While expressing grave concern about the horrific incident, saying that children as young as six years of age are working as domestic workers at bungalows of rich people. She added that people from reputed families have a vital role in hiring kids as domestic help at home.


She regretted the rising incidents of brutal torture against innocent underage domestic workers.


She said that she presented the domestic workers protection bill in November 2002, which was passed in the National Assembly.


She said that there is a dire need to discourage and condemn incidents of torture against domestic workers, adding that the accused in the Rizwana case, the civil judge and his wife, should be behind bars as soon as possible.


"In Islamabad, no one can hire a domestic worker under the age of 16," she mentioned.


She urged the institution to immediately pass the rules of the Domestic Workers Protection Bill so that incidents like the Rizwana Case may be curbed.
