On Friday, Abrar announced that he was leaving PTI. After crying many times during the press conference, the well-known musician stated that he was departing the party. Abrar joined PTI in December 2011 and has been involved in politics ever since. He would sing party hymns at rallies to captivate the crowd of workers. He was selected as the PTI's foreign secretary in 2013 and its president of the youth wing in 2012.

He ran for office in Narowal in 2013 and 2018, but Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) leader Ahsan Iqbal beat him both times. During the PTI government's 2019 term, Abrar was chosen to serve as chairman of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society.
