Some Forces In 'Final Push' To Wrap Up System: Shehbaz Sharif
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed fears some forces were at work to make a final push to wrap up the country's system, with an apparent reference to the prevailing political crisis in the country.

The premier made the remarks as he addressed a special session of the Senate on the occasion of golden jubilee celebrations of the upper house of the Parliament.

During his address, the premier observed that there's a total defiance in Pakistan at present. "I have seen difficult times in the country, but never like the current circumstances."

According to PM Shehbaz, the efforts seem to be aimed at bringing the system of the country to a total collapse.

Addressing the Speaker, he said, "don't you think the foreign diplomats, including those of allied nations, observe this [anarchy]."

Shehbaz Sharif further said that the orders of the Supreme Court and lower courts are being trampled upon and institutions' integrity has been put at stake.

He lamented the acts of arson, in an apparent reference to the PTI workers standoff with police while the police tried to take party's chief Imran Khan into custody in adherence with court orders.

Shehbaz termed it an irony that the situation prevails as Senate observes its golden jubilee celebrations.

He asked the political leadership to forge unity in their ranks in order to jointly resolve the issues facing the country.

IMF agreement

On the occasion, the premier assured the house that ongoing talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) would be finalised soon.

He further sad that a staff-level agreement may take place soon, and pointed at the fact that the country has accepted the toughest conditions put forth by the global lender.

Pakistan is facing its worst political crisis, with the IMF deal set to bring some ease on the economic front.

On Tuesday, US Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome expressed hope that a deal between Pakistan and the Fund will be finalised soon and assured the US' readiness to assist Islamabad in its efforts to resume a stalled $6.5 billion bailout programme.
