Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) – a close ally of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in the ruling coalition – has seconded the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) demand for holding polls in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) within 90 days as per the constitution.
PTI Chairman Imran Khan dissolved the assemblies of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to pave a way for fresh general elections in the country. It's the foremost demand of the PTI since Imran Khan was ousted in April 2022 through a vote of no-confidence.
PPP leader and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Faisal Karim Kundi backed Imran Khan's demand for polls in Punjab and KP, saying, "The PPP will ask the allies to follow what is in the law and the Constitution."
The PPP leader mentioned that the elections were held in the country despite the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
He also raised a question about why the PTI did not conduct local body polls while they were in government in Punjab.
Kundi said that the PTI used the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for the political victimization of rivals. He said that the PTI (during their tenure) filed bogus cases against the leaders of opponent political parties but was unable to provide any evidence against them before the courts.
He stressed that the PPP leadership did not believe in any political revenge and never used any institution for unleashing political vendetta against competitors.
While responding to a question, Kundi said that the governor can only provide recommendations; whereas, it was the duty of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to announce the schedule of the elections.
He highlighted the need for elections to be conducted in accordance with the Constitution of the country. He asked the ECP to finalize arrangements for holding fair and transparent elections across the country.
