Legislation Needed To End The Extension of Army Chief: Mushahid Husain
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Mushahid Husain has said that the practice of giving extensions to army chiefs needs to be finished 'once and for all' through a comprehensive legislative ruling and constitutional amendment.

The Senator, who is the chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Defence, said this on Friday during an appearance on a private news channel, adding that the practice of giving extensions only leads to political bargaining as they are politically motivated. He said that such acts harm the institution, the person concerned as well as the country.

"I think it’s time to present a constitutional amendment stating that there will be no extension in the tenure of any service chief," he said, adding that such extensions encouraged giving and taking favors and making political bargains. He said that the talks of extensions should be 'over once and for all'.

The Senator also said that the first tenures of General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and General Qamar Javed Bajwa were just fine, and the real trouble began when they got extensions.

"The first priority of the newly appointed army chief General Asim Munir will be to adopt pure professionalism," he said.
