President Arif Alvi on Thursday signed a summary on the appointment of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Asim Munir.
Prime ministerial advice had reached the President earlier. The president had then reached Lahore to confer with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has earlier appointed Munir as the new COAS, Sahir Shamshad Mirza was named Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. The two are expected to meet President Alvi soon.
The development follows months of nationwide hype and speculation over who will get the top army post. In a tweet on Thursday, Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced that the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had appointed General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, while General Asim Munir is to be the new COAS.
