Following the Supreme Court's warning of a suo motu notice being taken in case of further delays, the Punjab Police finally registered an FIR over the assassination attempt on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan.
The police named the shooter Naveed Ahmad as the prime suspect, and Sub-Inspector Amir Shahzad as the complainant. It was registered under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, and Section 302, 324, and 440 of the Pakistan Penal Code after a three-day delay.
The FIR however did not name the three individuals that Imran Khan had held responsible; namely Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and Major General Faisal Naseer.
The FIR was registered when the Inspector General of Police Faisal Shahkar told the Gujrat District Police Officer to lodge the case so a copy of the FIR could be submitted to the Supreme Court before their deadline ran out.
The Supreme Court had on Monday directed the IGP Faisal to register the FIR of the assassination attempt of Imran Khan within 24 hours, warning the police that the court would take suo motu notice if the FIR was not registered within the stipulated time.
On Thursday as the PTI long march caravan entered Wazirabad, a man identified as Naveed Ahmad, shot a round of bullets aimed at the PTI chief, injuring him in his leg. It was later learned that one by-stander was killed, while 14 others were injured as a result of the spray of bullets.
