Germany has announced an additional €10 million in flood relief for Pakistan as the country continues to rebuild itself from the damage caused by the devastating floods that put a third of the country under water.

The announcement was made by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock during a joint press conference with Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, who was on his maiden trip to Germany.

Expressing sympathy with the families suffering due to the devastating floods, she said Pakistan is the most affected country by climate change. “The current devastation in Pakistan is a reminder to the world about the dramatic consequences of the climate change,” she said.

She also said that Germany intended to diversify its relations with Pakistan in the economic sector, and is looking forward to investing in Pakistani ventures, especially infrastructure projects.

Acknowledging the meeting on Twitter, Bilawal said that it was a pleasure meeting his German counterpart in Berlin. He said the two discussed issues of bilateral interest, floods, cooperation on climate, green energy and enhancing economic ties.

The foreign minister also said he was grateful for Germany’s additional pledge, bringing the total aid from Germany up to €60 million.

The two also discussed Pakistan’s role in regional stability, with Baerbock appreciating Pakistan’s support for the evacuation of Afghan nationals desiring to leave Afghanistan for Germany and other countries.
