The Government College University (GCU) on Monday faced strong criticism from politicians after it hosted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan as a special guest for an event titled "Taleem Aur Hunar Sath Sath".
Speaking in Naya Daur TV programme "Insight With Tanzila Mazhar", Haqooq-e-Khalq Party President Ammar Ali Jan took a jibe at Imran for having double standards regarding student politics, saying the former prime minister held a political show at the institution today while on the other hand, he never allowed professors to talk about politics in even political science classes during his premiership.
"Imran's problem is that he has always termed his critics as anti-Pakistanis and considered his supporters as patriotic," he said.
Ammar said that the GCU had threatened to expel students taking part in a student march in 2019 and the PTI-led government had registered a sedition case against the organisers. "The GCU vice chancellor had removed instructor Zaighum Abbas from his post for talking about Kashmir," he said.
He further said that vice chancellors are affiliated with political parties to get promotions and key postings while students are prohibited from making unions and raising their voice on social issues.
"Vice chancellor is a highest academic post in any country. Look at the GCU vice chancellor. He termed Imran as the leader of the students during the event," he added.
Earlier, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz urged the relevant authorities to take action against GCU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Asghar Zaidi for desecrating the educational institution by organising a jalsa in the premises while Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman took notice of the event and said that it is awful to turn the institution into a political centre.
