A 12 Year Old Female Sold Off By Her Own Father
The police have arrested a man for selling his 12-year-old daughter into marriage in Jacobabad.

The girl’s father wanted to get her married to a man in exchange for Rs300,000. However, the police prevented the marriage and arrested the father while the groom escaped.

Later, the police registered a case and started further investigation into the matter.

According to law, it is illegal in Pakistan to marry before the age of 16 while according to the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), marriage before the age of 18 is a “fundamental violation of human rights.”

Last month, the National Commission on the Rights of Child (NCRC) had called upon the federal and provincial governments to devise a strategy by reviewing all the child marriage-related laws prevalent in the country.

The NCRC had asked the authorities to deal with the alleged violators and accused according to law and in future no one should be allowed to take the law into their hands.

It had said that child marriage is a form of rights violation, which takes away a child’s right to safe and healthy childhood and education, depriving him/ her of economic opportunities and social and political empowerment.
