In A First, Woman Police Officer Made AIG In KP
Ayesha Gul has made history by becoming the first female police officer to be promoted to the position of assistant inspector general of police (AIG) in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

Originally from Swabi, Gul is the first woman in the provincial police force to achieve the number two rank.  She will reportedly serve in Peshawar as the AIG Gender Equality, working towards the protection of the rights of women, children, and the transgender community. She will also oversee a help desk which has been established to respond to gender-related issues in the Central Police Office.

Gul was appointed by Inspector-General of Police KP Moazzam Jahan Ansari.  Previously, Ayesha served in the Islamabad Traffic Police and was promoted to superintendent of police in January because of her performance in this role.

In January 2021, the first woman was posted as the District Police Officer (DPO) in KP.  Sonia Samroz was posted as DPO for Lower Chitral, after also serving as the first female principal of the Manshera Police Training Centre.  Prior to her work in the police force, Samroz completed a Chevening Fellowship in the United Kingdom.

Female police officers make up around 1.8 per cent of the entire police force in Pakistan, with even fewer in superintendent positions, despite the government's 10 per cent quota for women in the police force.  Female police officers are often posted to roles targeting survivors of domestic violence, and other gender-related matters, with the aim of encouraging women to report these crimes to police.
