The government has requested an additional three weeks from the Supreme Court to complete its report on the 2014 Army Public School (APS) attack in which 147 people, mostly children, lost their lives.
This is the second extension requested by the government to submit the report, which was first due to the court on December 9th. The Supreme Court had originally given the government four weeks to complete a report on the attack, with a special directive that the government meet with parents of the slain children and listen to their opinions and sentiments.
In their request today, the government confirmed that Prime Minister Imran Khan and his committee had already met with bereaved parents once and had a second meeting scheduled.
The four-member cabinet committee includes federal Minister for Human Rights Dr. Shireen Mazari, Economic Affairs Minister Omar Ayub Khan, Inter-Provincial Coordination Minister Dr. Fehmida Mirza, and Minister for States and Frontier Regions Sahibzada Mohammad Mehboob Sultan.
The court had intimated that a meeting between the government and the parents of the deceased children would provide transparency for the still grieving parents, some of whom have long felt that no punctuative action has been taken against those responsible for protecting the school.
Furthermore, the apex court reiterated the prime minister's previous pledge to deliver justice to the families of those killed in the APS attack and hold accountable those who may have acted negligently.
