MNA Ali Wazir Granted Bail By Supreme Court
The Supreme Court (SC) has granted bail to MNA Ali Wazir who has been in jail since December last year. The decision was announced by Justice Tariq Masood in a case pertaining to hate speech registered in Karachi. The judge observed that the rule of consistency was not followed in Wazir's case.

MNA Mohsin Dawar took to Twitter to congratulate Wazir's supporters following the SC decision.

In December last year, Ali Wazir was arrested on charges of issuing derogatory remarks against state institutions.

The case against Wazir accused him and several PTM leaders of hatching a ‘criminal conspiracy’ and insulting state institutions. It was registered at Karachi’s Sohrab Goth police station, after which he was taken into custody from Peshawar. The arrest was made after the lawmaker’s participation in a ceremony held at the Army Public School (APS) Shuhada library to mark anniversary of the APS attack.

Others named in the FIR included PTM chief Manzoor Pashteen, MNA Mohsin Dawar, activists Sana Ijaz, Dr Said Alam, Javed Raheen, Muhammadullah Mehsud, Noorullah Tareen, Saleh Jan, Mullah Behram, Abdullah Nangyal, Sher Khan Mehsud, Qazi Tahir, Gilaman Pashteen and Hidayatullah Pashteen. All others booked along with Wazir were granted bail.

The FIR included sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups), 505-B (statements for inducing a person to commit offence against state), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 188 (disobeying order of public servant) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

His 11-month incarceration was termed unfair by rights activists who had called on the judiciary to 'serve justice'. Supporters and workers of the Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) used the hashtag #FreeAliWazir for the online campaign demanding his release.

The SC decision granting bail to the lawmaker has been welcomed by journalists and rights activists.
