Security officials and banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have reportedly denied the reports of more than 100 TTP prisoners having been released during negotiations between both sides.
The reports claimed that the government had released more than 100 TTP prisoners as a 'goodwill gesture' following ceasefire announced by the militant group.
Dawn quoted TTP spokesperson Mohammad Khorasani as saying that media reports about the release of 100 TTP prisoners are false, adding that the TTP does honour the 'ceasefire agreement'.
He added that the negotiation teams have not formally begun the talks yet, so it was too early to say anything about the conditions of the dialogue and the demands. He made this statement while reacting to reports that the TTP has sought release of its prisoners.
Dawn further reported that a security official confirmed that no one has been freed so far.
Earlier this month, on November 8, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had announced that a ceasefire had been agreed upon between the TTP and the government of Pakistan.
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain had said that talks were being held within the ambit of the constitution. He added that the ceasefire had come about as a result of mediation by the interim Afghan government. Prime Minister Imran Khan had revealed that the government was holding talks with the outlawed TTP in an interview to TRT World on October 1.
Despite the ‘ceasefire’, the TTP attacks continue.
