Pakistan To Stay On FATF Grey List Despite ‘Good Progress’ On Action Plan

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has decided to keep Pakistan on its grey list. In its decision, FATF President Dr Marcus Pleyer said that the country is yet to finish two concurrent action plans containing 34 agenda items. He said that Pakistan has managed to address 30 of these items.

Pakistan has been on the FATF grey list since June 2018 for its failure to fully counter terror financing and anti-money laundering regimes.

The FATF president said, “Overall, Pakistan is making good progress on this new action plan. Four out of the seven items are now addressed or largely addressed.”

In July, Minister for Energy Hammad Azhar had said that India was ‘actively’ engaged in politicising and undermining the technical processes and spirit of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

In a tweet posted in July, Hammad said, “Our progress is nevertheless undeniable and we shall soon be completing our both action plans.”

He said the statement of Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar only confirmed what Pakistan had been saying all along.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi had also said Pakistan has consistently maintained that India has politicised the FATF and “the recent Indian statements made clear their mal-intent.”

“Manipulating an important technical forum for narrow political designs against Pakistan is disgraceful but not surprising for the Modi government,” the foreign minister said in a tweet.
