Preedy Street, Karachi (circa 1950)
An undated photograph of Karachi's fashionable Preedy Street, taken likely in the 1950s, shows the locality's diverse visitors, and two trams.

Karachi's trams service opened in 1885 and was operated by the East India Company. It ran on an inverted U-shaped grooved-bridge rail, which was four feet wide. A year later, the steam trams were replaced by horse-drawn ones. By 1909, they were all petrol-driven.

Mohamedali Tramways Company, or MTC, took control of the Karachi tramways in 1949, and continued to operate them until they were shut down in 1975.

The 28-foot-long single-deck cross-bench cars seen in this photograph were likely converted to diesel. n
