Shah of Iran in Washington (1949)
Riding with President Truman, the Shah of Iran, on a month-long goodwill visit to the US, is escorted at dusk by motorcade from the National Airport.

He arrived at the District Building in Washington on November 16, 1949 where in a brief ceremony he was presented keys to the city. He stayed in the US capitol for four days before embarking on a tour of the rest of the country.

The photo shows the motorcade on Pennsylvania Avenue with the Capitol in the background.

Ties between Tehran and Washington broke down after the Iranian revolution in 1979. A recent breakthrough between Iran and the US on Tehran's nuclear program is being seen as an unprecedented event.
