Christian lawmaker wants liquor ban for Chritians

Reported in Jang (May 22, 2014), PML-N’s minority member Shehzad Masif has filed submitted a resolution in the Punjab Assembly against liquor permits for Christians. According to the resolution, consuming alcohol is forbidden in Christianity like it is in Islam, and there should be a complete ban on licenses for trading or consuming liquor in the province and the country.

Indian woman in Layyah to marry internet lover

Reported in Dunya  (May 25, 2014), a lady doctor from India arrived in Layyah to convert to Islam and marry a man she fell in love with over the internet. She is in Pakistan on a visit visa, but is trying to get Pakistani citizenship.

Police arrests drunk and disorderly couple in Lahore

Police in Lahore arrested a couple for being drunk and disorderly (sharaab pee kay ghul ghapara kartay hue), according to Jang (May 23, 2014). When the police tried to arrest the boy, the girl stopped them and said she would not let her friend go alone. A medical report showed they were both drunk.

Sikh protesters break Islamabad police’s pride

Reported in Nawa-e-Waqt (May 24, 2014) when Sikh protestors broke into the Parliament House, the Islamabad police inspector-general was initially telling cops to break their legs (ainna diyan lattan bhan deyo) but ended up adjuring the Sikh leaders to leave the premises.

Quoted in Express (May 26, 2014), Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said about 10,000 people showed up to listen to Imran Khan at his protest in Faisalabad, and about 20,000 people showed up to listen to folk singer Nooran Lal at her concert nearby.

Lawyer rips off traffic warden’s uniform

Jang reports (May 25, 2014) that a lawyer ripped off a traffic warden’s uniform when he tried to give him a ticket for violating traffic rules in Lahore. When the lawyer was stopped, he lost his temper (aapay say bahir ho gaye) and began to beat up the traffic warden.

Woman injures traffic warden with a stone

Reported in Dunya (May 26, 2014), when a traffic warden in Lahore stopped a woman for jumping a red light late at night, she threw a stone at him and injured him. She was taken in custody and the warden was taken to hospital. The woman was freed after she apologized.

Supreme Court writes verdict in Urdu


Deviating from the court norms, Supreme Court judge Justice Jawad S Khwaja dictated a verdict in Urdu, reports Dunya (May 27, 2014). He said the English had left, but we were still clinging to their language. English is not our language, but some English-lovers take pride in speaking it. But they’re not as good at it as they should be.

Prime minister invites Dharmindra to Pakistan

Rare equipment at Lady Willingdon Hospital disappears
