As Afghans desperate to escape Taliban rule are being evacuated, more attacks are feared after a series of blasts outside the Kabul Airport killed at least 175 people. US embassy in Afghanistan once again warned its citizens to stay away from the Kabul airport. On Saturday morning, a US drone strike in eastern Afghanistan killed a ‘planner’ of the ISIL-affiliated group.
Following the attack, a US military statement said, “Initial indications are that we killed the target. We know of no civilian casualties.”
Earlier, US President Joe Biden had vowed to retaliate for the Kabul blasts and confirmed that the Islamic State – Khorasan (IS-K) was behind the incident.
Meanwhile, extra forces have been deployed around Kabul’s airport to prevent people from gathering. According to international media reports, additional checkpoints have been established by the Taliban on roads leading to the airport.
Captain Bill Urban of the US Central Command said, “The unmanned air strike occurred in the Nangarhar province of Afghanistan. Initial indications are that we killed the target. We know of no civilian casualties.” Thursday attack on the Kabul airport was claimed by IS-Khorasan.
