The Lahore High Court (LHC) has rejected a plea seeking the reinstatement of former premier Nawaz Sharif as head of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN), ARY News reported on Tuesday.
The petition was ruled inadmissible by LHC judge Justice Ali Baqar Najafi, who also upheld the registrar's office's objection.
The petition had been submitted by Afaq Ahmed, a lawyer.
In the appeal submitted to the high court, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Shaikh Rashid, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Sirajul Haq, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the federal government, and the prime minister were included as parties.
"In 2017, Nawaz Sharif lost his eligibility to serve in the National Assembly. The appeal for Nawaz Sharif's dismissal from the party office was filed by Imran Khan, Shaikh Rashid, and Sirajul Haq, according to the plea. In 2018, the Supreme Court ruled that Nawaz Sharif should no longer serve as the party's president," the petition read.
"Nawaz Sharif was disqualified from the National Assembly in 2017. Imran Khan, Shaikh Rashid, and Sirajul Haq had filed a petition for the removal of Nawaz Sharif from the party office. In the year 2018, the Supreme Court ordered the removal of Nawaz Sharif as president of the party," the plea stated.
"The Supreme Court has disqualified Imran Khan from NA-95 Mianwali. Imran Khan and his collaborators, Shaikh Rashid and Sirajul Haq, should be removed as party heads," the petitioner further argued. "Imran Khan, Shaikh Rashid, and Sirajul Haq have not remained truthful and trustworthy," according to the plea.
Additionally, it requested the court rule on proceedings brought under Article 63 of the constitution against Imran Khan, Sheikh Rashid, and Sirajul Haq.
Nawaz Sharif was removed from office as prime minister in July 2017 by the Supreme Court in a suo motu proceeding brought about by the "Panama Papers" disclosures. He was then found ineligible to serve as party president.
