Senior PTI leader Asad Umar on Wednesday announced to resign as the party’s secretary general, hours after spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry said he was parting ways with former premier Imran Khan.

“I have only resigned from the party position,” Umar said while addressing a presser in Islamabad, after his release from the Adiala Jail.

Announcing his decision, the senior politician said that he is also no more a part of PTI’s core committee.

Umar also told media persons that he had made the decision to quit the position at his will, “without any duress.”

He further said that it was time to defuse the political turmoil via talks. “This is what Pakistan’s allies have been saying as they are concerned about the situation.”

Earlier, Fawad announced to part ways with PTI chairman Imran Khan, and said he had resigned from the party position.

“Ref. My earlier statement where I unequivocally condemned 9th May incidents, I have decided to take a break from politics,” he said in a tweet.

“Therefore, I have resigned from party position and parting ways from Imran Khan,” he added.

On Tuesday, another senior leader Shireen Mazari announced to quit the party and “active politics”, a day after she was taken into custody from outside Adiala Jail after she was released on court orders in another case.

Speaking about the violent protests following the arrest of PTI chief Imran Khan, she said, “I condemn the violence on May 9 and 10. I also gave an undertaking to the Islamabad High Court in this regard.”

Riots broke out earlier this month as the supporters of PTI chairman Imran Khan went on a rampage against his arrest from the IHC premises in the Al-Qadir Trust case. As the unrest ensued, the protesters torched government and military installations, and attacked an army vehicle in at least one recorded case.
