The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) has urged that those responsible for the violent demonstrations that broke out on May 9 in response to the detention of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan be brought to justice.
The demand was made on Friday at the Bilawal House at a meeting of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Central Executive Committee (CEC).
The conference, which was jointly presided over by former president Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, was referred to as a "black day in the history of Pakistan" on May 9.
PPP leader and Federal Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman briefed the media after the CEC meeting and stated that the law should go into effect to take the proper punitive action against the criminals engaged in the violence and arson attacks that day.
She said that PTI officials gave orders for violent protests following Khan's arrest, and arson assaults were committed around the country. They then refused to take responsibility for the unrest that ensued.
She claimed that PTI officials are experts at making political U-turns.
Rehman continued by stating that even in extremely difficult circumstances, PPP supporters had never engaged in such aggressive behavior. The violent episodes on May 9 were unparalleled in Pakistan's history, he said.
She remarked that even after the martyrdom of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto, party members had not displayed such a response.
She recounted how, anytime Pakistan was going through a difficult moment, the former president, Zardari, would constantly raise the slogan in support of Pakistan's unity and togetherness.
Rehman questioned the PTI's political strategy as well, saying that the party's leadership has always put their own political interests before Pakistan's integrity.
The PPP leader said that the PTI has transgressed political "red lines" in the nation.
On Twitter, Bilawal voiced his party's worries about the current digital census and called out the "May 9 carnage" in no uncertain terms.
"The PPP CEC met today to unequivocally condemn the carnage of May 9 wreaked by PTI mobs in many parts of the country and to draw attention to growing concerns about the census process and the economic challenges faced by the public."
Rehman also stated that attendees of the meeting had placed their complete trust in Bilawal and Zardari's leadership.
