President Arif Alvi has said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan needs to publicly denounce the May 9 riots, which saw attacks on government buildings and military sites.
President Alvi, a close adviser to the PTI chief, advocated for action against the event's miscreants in an appearance on Geo News' "Capital Talk" show.
The PTI leadership, which includes the party chairman, has denounced the assaults in which the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi was also a target and demanded an investigation into the incidents by the Supreme Court.
Imran Khan's arrest in the Al-Qadir Trust case set off violent demonstrations, which compelled the police to detain hundreds of PTI workers.
The day that turmoil descended on the country following Khan's arrest, May 9, 2023, was described by the army as a "dark chapter" as the PTI workers stormed army sites.
The Pakistan Army Act, the Official Secrets Act, and other laws would be used in the prosecution of the vandals who attacked army installations, according to both the military and the government.
However, they agreed that the perpetrators should be tried and "due process" should be followed, despite human rights organizations and certain members of the government opposing prosecuting civilians under the Army Act.
The president further stated in the interview that the suspects' human rights should be upheld and that they should not be subjected to torture throughout the proceedings.
"The individuals involved should face legal repercussions," he added.
President Alvi said that the PTI chairman did not oppose Army Chief General Asim Munir.
He said, "Imran Khan ordered me to inform General Bajwa that he should accept whoever the institution accepts as the future leader.
Khan has lambasted the military's current leadership and laid the responsibility for his purported involvement in the assassination attempt on November 3, 2022, on a senior armed forces officer.
