Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has announced that the sit-in outside the Supreme Court (SC) in Islamabad will continue till Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial’s resignation, inviting workers from all political parties to participate in the protest.
A sit-in by the ruling coalition of 13 political parties outside the Supreme Court is scheduled for Monday (tomorrow) to protest the judiciary's ‘undue facilitation’ of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan.
The protest sit-in takes place as the Supreme Court hears the Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) request to reconsider its directive to hold elections for the Punjab Assembly on May 14. One day following the expiration of the court-mandated election deadline, the petition will be heard.
In a video message, Fazl stated that the sit-in will be held in protest of the protection being provided to a "criminal" by a three-member bench of the Supreme Court and the Islamabad High Court.
He urged all political party employees to arrive at Constitution Avenue in Islamabad at 9:00 am on Monday in order to demonstrate the country's opposition to the three-judge bench and the high court's protection of criminals.
Thousands of workers will arrive at the location from all the provinces, according to the PDM chairman, who also serves as the president of the Fazl faction of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI).
Fazl said that the courts were enabling a "criminal" to undermine and fragment the country by granting Khan bail.
He directed the workers of Ansarul Islam, a JUI-F volunteer group, to maintain order and calm throughout the demonstration. He also requested that the lawyers attend the protest to uphold the rule of law.
Fazl went on to say that the entire country was protesting the biased way in which the Constitution was being violated by a select few members of an institution.
To send a clear message to the judiciary to stop taking such steps, the PDM chief stated, "We should make it a national protest."
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) also said that it will participate in the sit-in organized by the PMD.
At a party leaders' meeting held on Saturday at their Model Town Secretariat, which was presided over by Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique, the attendees resolved to take part in the JUI-F's scheduled protest outside the apex court.
Saif ul Malook Khokhar, a party member from Lahore, was named as the rally's convener by PMLN Chief Organiser Maryam Nawaz. The Islamabad demonstration will begin at Jati Umrah in Lahore.
Maryam was originally scheduled to lead the demonstration in Islamabad, but that decision was later reversed.
