Punjab Governor Baligh-ur-Rehman has written a letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), urging the body to consult all stakeholders before deciding Punjab election date in view of the “alarming law and order situation”.
The governor asked the ECP to consult stakeholders regarding the economic and security situation before announcing a date to hold elections in the province.
Punjab Governor Baligh-ur-Rehman noted that the Punjab Assembly was dissolved according to the law and constitution. He said his office will play its role to fulfill all constitutional requirements.
Regarding providing a date for the elections, he said the country was facing economic and security issues which should be taken into consideration.
The Lahore High Court (LHC) has admitted the plea filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) seeking the announcement of the date for the general elections in Punjab.
LHC Justice Jawad Hassan heard the plea and the arguments were presented by PTI’s lawyer Barrister Ali Zafar. Several senior PTI leaders were also present in the court during the hearing.
Barrister Ali Zafar informed the court that Punjab election date must be within 90 days after the assembly has been dissolved but the Punjab governor has not yet announced the date for elections. He pleaded the court to direct the Punjab governor to announce the date of elections in Punjab.
While giving remarks, Justice Jawad Hassan said that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should be made party in the case as it needs to be addressed that who is responsible to declare the election date. Upon which the Barrister Ali Zafar lawyer said that PTI wrote a letter to the Punjab governor for declaration of date for elections but no response has been received so far.
During the hearing, the federal government’s lawyer sought time to present arguments before the court.
The court issued notices to Punjab governor and ECP seeking response and adjourned the hearing till February 3.
