Lahore High Court (LHC) has annulled the notification of suspension of Ahmad Awais and reinstated him as Punjab Advocate General.

The plea was heard by LHC Justice Asim Hafeez. The petitioner had pleaded that the caretaker government was not authorized to remove law officers and the advocate general and requested the court to reinstate Ahmad Awais as Punjab Advocate General.

The court summoned the Punjab government on 30 January at 10 AM and directed the parties to submit a response regarding this matter.

During the hearing, advocate Hamid Khan said that elections of the Punjab Bar Council are coming ahead and the Punjab advocate general has to conduct the poll.

Upon which, Justice Asim said that where it is written that elections could not be conducted in absence of the advocate general.

Additional Advocate General Barrister Hassan Khalid Ranjha informed the court that new law officers have been appointed but the Punjab caretaker government has removed Ahamd Awais from the post of the advocate general.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Punjab caretaker government had removed the advocate general who was appointed during the tenure of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government. Soon after, Ahmad Awais had challenged his suspension in the LHC.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has challenged appointment of Mohsin Naqvi as Punjab caretaker chief minister in Supreme Court.

A plea filed by the party stated that Mohsin Naqvi was ‘biased’ and his appointment as Punjab caretaker chief minister would affect transparency of elections.

PTI has also challenged the appointment of Raja Riaz as opposition leader.

Earlier, former CM Chaudhry Parvez Elahi also questioned how one could expect justice from a person who had struck a plea bargain in the Haris Steel case.

“How can my close relative become the caretaker chief minister?” he questioned, terming the ECP’s “controversial” decision to be in violation of the rules. “We will approach the Supreme Court against ECP’s decision.”
