Everyone knows how PTI won the 2018 elections, and it is not difficult to conclude where they stand after today's local government polls in Sindh, says analyst Nadia Naqi.
If the party wasn't able to perform during the local government elections, how does it claim having a two-thirds majority, she questioned.
On the low turnout, Naqi said it was because of the uncertainty surrounding the polls. Also, looking at the limited powers of the mayor in the past, people have little confidence in the elections.
Capt (retd) Faheem-uz-Zaman pointed at the possible political engineering in the polls. He criticised ECP and Sindh government for the delay in the announcement of the results, saying it could lead to rigging.
"It took the authorities four days in 1945-46 to compile the results but that doesn't mean it's okay in 2023 as well for the election commission to delay results for more than 36 hours in the biggest city of the country", Faheem added.
He also said that the PTI doesn't have local representatives; they rather relied on technology to win the elections. "The policy doesn't work in local body elections", he said.
Journalist Nasir Baig Chughtai quoted a Returning Officer as saying that ECP staff lacked training with regard to the polling process, and that caused the delay in the results.
Nadia Naqi was critical of PTI's politics at the grassroots level. She said that the party lacked a structure and failed to mobilise support base in the local body elections.
PPP, on the other hand, was continuously working, listening to people's demands and making sure that it stayed connected with the masses. The strategy helped it in Baldia Town by-election last year and now in local body elections too.
