In wake of consistent defeats at the hands of arch-rivals PTI, PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif has asked the top cadre of the party to develop a new strategy against the former ahead of forthcoming polls, a report published in Dawn suggests.
The report quoted a Cabinet member as saying that Nawaz wants a 'charge-sheet' developed against PTI chief and his 'facilitators' in the establishment that include an ex-COAS, two former spy chiefs, and an ex-chief justice of the country, to target them during the electioneering.
The fresh attempt is to be made with the aim to renew ruling party's slogan of vote ko izzat do (respect the vote).
The report further stated that the new narrative is required in light of the fact that the Toshakhana scam and the audio leaks have not done much damage to the former ruling party.
The PML-N also seems to be worried about the fact that the elections in Punjab maybe due in just a few months' span and that the former premier has been regaining some of the lost popularity.
The local leaders, it maintained, are also not happy about the absence of the top leadership of the party during the vote of confidence in Punjab.
They want the party supremo and others to return to the country for the party to face the rising political threats in the form of a united front.
On Saturday (Jan 14), Punjab Assembly stood dissolved as Governor Baligh-ur-Rehman recused himself from the process, saying he will not become a part of the move.
According to Article 112(1) of the Constitution, the assembly stands automatically dissolved at expiration of 48 hours following the chief minister’s advice.
A notification from the governor was subsequently sent to Punjab Chief Minister Parvez Elahi and Leader of the Opposition in the provincial assembly Hamza Shehbaz.
What follows is the appointment of a caretaker chief minister after due consultation between CM, Leader of the Opposition and the governor.
The governor also sought the names of the nominees for the slot tomorrow (Jan 17).
Earlier that day, Imran Khan confirmed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will be “tested” through a vote of confidence, a move similar to the one he faced as the country’s premier in April last year.
“Absolutely, we will test him,” Imran told Meher Bokhari during his interview with Hum News, when asked whether the PML-N president may be asked to obtain a vote of confidence from the National Assembly.
