Finance minister Ishaq Dar said that the coalition government inherited a weak economy, but is focusing on “fixing things to put them in the right direction”. He said the government is introducing reforms in all sectors to achieve sustainable economic growth and development.

The finance minister made these remarks in an online meeting with the President of Asian Infrastructure and Investment Bank (AIIB), Mr. Jin Liqun, on Friday. The minister also briefed the President AIIB on the economic outlook of the country.

Dar said that due to pragmatic measures taken by the PDM government, Pakistan is “destined for progress and development”

The finance minister also informed the President AIIB of damage caused by catastrophic floods in Pakistan last year, and their impact on the national economy. The forthcoming Donor’s Conference in Geneva was also discussed in the virtual meeting.

Dar extended an invitation to the President AIIB to visit Pakistan this year. He highlighted the “deep rooted friendship” between the Bank and Pakistan, and thanked the AIIB for supporting Pakistan in difficult times.

The President AIIB lauded the relationship between Pakistan and the AIIB, and thoroughly commended Pakistan for being “an excellent member of the AIIB”. The President told the finance minister he appreciated the economic policies and reforms of the government for benefit of the general public. The President AIIB spoke of the different roles his institution plays in infrastructure development projects and investment initiatives across the world.
