Speaking in the National Assembly, the minister said 10 to 15 commandos – part of the unit that was deployed in the operation in Bannu cantonment – sustained injuries.

He apprised the House that one of the 33 terrorists detained inside the compound had snatched a weapon from one of the employees, initiating a hostage situation.

"The entire [CTD] compound was cleared by 2:30pm," he maintained.

Asif termed the incident a clear sign of the total collapse of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government.

On Sunday afternoon, militants took hold of one of the provincial counterterrorism department's internment facilities in Bannu's well-guarded cantonment area.

The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) had claimed that its militants were responsible for overpowering their “captors” in a “secret detention facility” in the city. Its leaders issued audio messages to the hostage-takers "congratulating" them on this "brave act".

Electricity, along with internet and cellular services, were also shut following the incident.

In another incident in the province's North Waziristan district yesterday, a soldier and two civilians were martyred while another person was injured in a suicide blast.
